Aldi has announced a new change coming to its self-checkouts across the UK in the hopes of “improving the shopping experience for customers”.

Currently, shoppers can only buy lottery tickets at manned checkouts – a move that was introduced in 2021.

Four years ago, the budget supermarket said it was working with National Lottery operator Camelot to bring The National Lottery to all stores for the first time.

In 2021, Aldi rolled out the National Lottery’s full raft of draw-based games at its checkouts so customers could “easily and conveniently” pick up their tickets when doing their food shop.

Lucky Dip tickets for Lotto, EuroMillions, Lotto HotPicks, EuroMillions HotPicks, Set For Life and Thunderball games were among those added to checkouts.

However, customers will soon be able to buy lottery tickets at self-checkout tills in all stores.

Additionally, an age verification check will be carried out by a member of staff at Aldi before shoppers can complete their transactions.

The rollout is currently in progress in more than 1,050 shops, with full completion expected this spring.

Richard Thornton, communications director at Aldi, commented: “We’re always looking for ways to improve the shopping experience for our customers which is why we’ve made it even easier to enter the National Lottery while picking up essentials at our self-checkouts.

Jenny Blogg, operations director at Allwyn added: “As we continue on our retail transformation journey – adapting our offering for a changing retail landscape and new-look stores – we’re delighted to be expanding our partnership with Aldi.

Jumbo Interactive Limited has announced its results for the half year ended 31 December 2024, revenue was down 10.5% to $66.1 million, underlying EBITDA1 down 12.9% to $30.6 million.

Managed Services includes Jumbo’s subsidiaries in the UK and Canada. In aggregate, Managed
Services generated $120.7 million (1H24: $126.0 million) in TTV, $12.3 million (1H24: $13.1
million) in revenue and $2.7 million (1H24: 3.2 million) in EBITDA, reflecting an EBITDA/revenue
margin of 21.6% (1H24: 24.2%).

The lower EBITDA reflects subdued revenue growth, particularly in Canada as a number of customer contracts across the lottery value chain were re-evaluated, and the investment Jumbo has made in setting the foundations for future growth.

The ongoing positive cash generation and strength of the balance sheet resulted in the Board
determining to pay an interim, fully franked dividend of 24.0 cents per share. This translates to a
dividend payout ratio of 84.2%, at the top end of our targeted 65% to 85% dividend payout ratio
range.

As part of a proactive approach to capital management, in September 2022 Jumbo commenced an
on-market share buy-back of up to $25 million. In 1H25 $4.65 million worth of shares had been
purchased.

The Group intends to continue the on-market share buy-back program but will maintain a disciplined approach to execution, with the timing and number of shares to be purchased dependent on the prevailing share price and alternative capital deployment opportunities.

Jumbo Managing Director, CEO and Founder Mike Veverka said “The large jackpot environment in
the first six months of FY25 was relatively subdued prompting changes to marketing techniques
and cost base management.

The successful launch of Jumbo’s proprietary “Daily Winners” Premiumloyalty program has had a positive effect on our core Powerball and OzLotto games and helped with player engagement in a low jackpot period. Progress in Canada and the UK remains on track under new leadership and the balance sheet remains strong with available cash of over $50 million.”

Norsk Tipping said it will no longer be possible to go to the store to hand in the Lotto or Tippekuupon tickets.

Flaxlodd is the only game from Norsk Tipping that will be available for sale over the counter in three years. It is sad and strange that the era of traditional commission business is coming to an end, a partnership that stretches back to Norsk Tipping’s birth.

But the customer trend is clear and clear, and it forces difficult choices, says Roger Soleim, director of Customer Meetings at Norsk Tipping.

The choice means that in three years there will no longer be traditional commission agents who sell Lotto, Vikinglotto, Tipping and the other games from a terminal behind the counter.

The odds disappeared already a few years ago. Only Flax remains. Of Norsk Tipping’s total sales, approx. 90 percent digital, and the development continues. – Digitization like this happens in many areas of society. Also with us, says Soleim.

The Illinois Lottery sales topped $3.87 billion during the fiscal year of 2024 up 5%. iLottery sales account for approximately 39% of all draw-based games sales and 17% of total sales in FY24 Q1-Q3.

Operating Income was $704 million, which is 12% more than projected and 3% more than the same period in FY23.

Instant ticket sales through Q3 were $1,595 million, 2% below the previous year, and 4% higher than the same period in FY23. Instant sales are down primarily due to a decrease in sales of the $5 and $10 price points.

All price points are down compared to Plan with the exception the $30 and $50. $30 ticket sales are up $36 million and the Department’s first and only $50 ticket is up $39 million from Plan, but the $5 ticket category is down $64 million from Plan and the $10 ticket category is down $24 million.

In its history, most of the revenue from the Illinois State Lottery, 65 cents of each $1, goes to prizes. Another 10 cents per dollar is reserved for commissions, bonuses, and operating expenses. That leaves 25 cents availablefor state funds, including the Common School Fund.

From that total, $2.3 billion went to prizes, $186 million covered commissions and expenses,
and $3.7 million for the Capital Projects Fund. That left $762 million for the Common School Fund.

The Lottery Corporation reported a 5.6% decrease in revenue for the first half of 2025, with EBITDA down by 7.4% and net profit after tax falling 19.2% compared to the previous year.

Earnings per share declined by 19.4% to 7.9 cents, while the interim dividend remained at 8.0 cents per share, fully franked.

The company introduced a new Friday Weekday Windfall draw, generating over $50 million in incremental turnover. Plans for a Saturday Lotto game change are on track for May 2025, and a Powerball change is scheduled for FY26. Growth in active registered customers and digital share was driven by investments in marketing and customer experience.

The results reflect challenges in the market, but also the corporation’s commitment to engage stakeholders through dividend offerings and reinvestment opportunities.

Allwyn, operator of The National Lottery, today announced that National Lottery players who play in shops will be able to opt to have their prizes paid directly into their bank accounts for the first time.

In a partnership with payments provider, Bottomline, Allwyn has created a quick, easy online claim process that will see retail prizes of between £500.01 and £50,000 paid more quickly than ever before.

The new solution is the latest development in the revised claims process that Allwyn had to introduce when it took over as National Lottery operator in 2024. This was following the Post Office’s decision to no longer pay National Lottery retail prizes between £500.01 and £50,000 (called ‘mid-tier prizes’).

Last year, Allwyn continued to make upgrades to the process and has now directly paid out over 45,000 mid-tier prizes to in-store players – amounting to over £50 million in prize money.

This new enhancement isn’t just good news for players, but it will also significantly reduce administration and postage costs – as Allwyn will no longer need to prepare and post thousands of cheques. This cost efficiency will see more money going to National Lottery-funded Good Causes.

With the new payment solution, retail players can go to claims.national-lottery.co.uk, enter their email address and then fill in an easy-to-complete claim form – this asks for the player’s details, some details about the winning ticket, and prompts the player to upload an image of the ticket. If a winner has any questions during the process or needs some additional support, they can call Allwyn’s Customer Care Team who will be happy to help.

At this point, the default option will be for the prize to be paid directly into the player’s bank account, although they can still choose to be paid by cheque if that is their preference – which has been standard payment method for these up until now (including when the Post Office was still paying these prizes).

Once the claim form has been submitted and processed, the player will receive an email with a unique, secure link for them to submit their bank account number and sort code. The system will then automatically check that the name on the account matches the name entered on the prize claim form. As soon as this information has been successfully submitted by the player, the payment will be processed and will be paid directly into the player’s bank account within 24 hours*.

Allwyn’s Operations Director, Jenny Blogg, said: “We’re delighted to introduce this completely new payment solution, which will see, for the first time, people who play The National Lottery in shops be able to have their prizes paid directly into their bank accounts.

“Not only will this see these prizes paid faster than ever before, but it also drastically cuts down on administration and postage costs. This cost efficiency will see more money going to the Good Causes that The National Lottery supports and see prize money in players’ pockets in record time – so it really is a win-win.”

The 16 state lottery companies that are part of the German Lotto and Toto Block (DLTB) can look back on a very successful year.

With over €8.5 billion in stakes, it is actually the best result since the DLTB was founded. “2025 will mark the 70th anniversary of the first LOTTO 6aus49 draw. We are really proud to be starting this anniversary year with so much momentum,” says Michael Barth, Managing Director of LOTTO Bremen. The smallest of the 16 state lottery companies has been the lead company in the DLTB for the next two years since January 1, 2025.

On average, the state lottery companies have produced a lucky new millionaire every other day. In total, around €8.56 billion was spent on state-approved lotteries in Germany in 2024. This is an increase of around 4.4% over the previous year. The most popular lottery among Germans remains LOTTO 6aus49 with a stake volume of €3.5 billion, followed by Eurojackpot with €2.6 billion.

At the beginning of December, a mega jackpot of €120 million was won again in the Eurojackpot. Two players from Germany were each able to enjoy €60 million. Such long and high jackpot phases, as recently in June and December, have played a large part in the good result of 2024.

The taxes and duties paid from the stakes to the respective state budgets and recipients have once again enabled many projects for the common good to be supported in all federal states. In 2024, around €3.42 billion – around €9.4 million per day – benefited the general public, particularly in the areas of sport, environmental protection, art, culture, monument preservation and welfare. “This is also an absolute record,” says Michael Barth. “With their additional and wide-ranging sponsorship cooperations, the state lottery companies are a reliable pillar of social coexistence, even in an increasingly competitive gaming market,” Barth continues.
Positive development of online channels
As in previous years, more and more players are also using the digital offerings of the state lottery companies. Their regional websites and apps again recorded increasing user numbers in 2024. Those interested in gaming can conveniently and securely place tips for most gaming offers online via these regional offerings or via the LOTTO.de service and information portal. In this way, a total of over €1.4 billion in gaming stakes was generated, an increase of 17.3% compared to the previous year.
LOTTO acceptance point as an anchor
The most important sales channel in 2024 continued to be the classic LOTTO acceptance point. Even if life is becoming more digital in all areas, local acceptance points, especially in rural areas, are more important than ever. Michael Barth: “Whether in the kiosk, the petrol station or the supermarket – the approximately 21,000 acceptance points in Germany have an important structural policy function as local suppliers and social contact points. The employees in our acceptance points know the concerns and needs of their customers and strengthen contact with our players. They are our most important local LOTTO ambassadors.”

The most frequently drawn number in 2024 was 8, followed by 5 and 9. The number 42 was the least frequently drawn. In total, over 1,200 players were able to enjoy a win of more than €100,000 in 2024.
Outlook for 2025

Looking ahead to next year and the challenges as the new leader of the DLTB, Michael Barth says: “Our result last year was outstanding. Of course, we want to maintain this in 2025 and further strengthen our main product. We will continue to meet the challenges posed by strict regulation and the excessive advertising behavior of other market participants with high quality, innovative capacity and responsibility for social interaction.”
