GambleAware urged people to “open up” after a survey suggested 67% of the public believe there is still stigma around gambling harms, and warned that anyone could be at risk – including children.

It unveiled an installation unveiled at Westfield London featuring 85,000 poker chips – one for each child aged 11-17 in Britain currently experiencing gambling harm.

GambleAware is calling for stricter restrictions on gambling advertising, saying the addictive nature of gambling products and advertising combined with the ubiquity of gambling advertising meant anyone could be at risk of harm.

Kathryn Townsend, Nationwide’s head of customer vulnerability, said: “While gambling can be an enjoyable activity for many, excessive or problem gambling can have negative impacts.

The Professional Footballers’ Association of Northern Ireland (PFA NI) has unveiled a groundbreaking collaboration with Gamban, a leading provider of gambling-blocking software, to aid its members in combating the detrimental effects of problem gambling.

Through this partnership, PFA NI members will be granted free access to Gamban’s cutting-edge technology, which effectively blocks access to online gambling platforms and applications across various devices.

By offering this vital service, PFA NI seeks to safeguard players from the perils of gambling addiction, empowering them with the necessary tools to maintain control over their well-being.

“As the representative body for professional footballers in Northern Ireland, we are committed to supporting our members both on and off the pitch,” said Carvill.

“Gambling addiction is a growing concern within football and this partnership with Gamban is a significant step in providing practical help to those who need it.”

Melissa Etherington, Partnerships Executive at Gamban, commented: “Gambling addiction is a growing issue in football, which impacts mental health, finances and a player’s performance on the pitch.

“It also has the potential to impact sports integrity. We are delighted to partner with PFA NI to raise awareness of Gamban among those most at risk from harms related to online gambling.”

This initiative is part of PFA NI’s wider commitment to player welfare, providing educational resources, confidential support, and mental health assistance to members who may be grappling with gambling issues.

This Problem Gambling Awareness Month and DraftKings is reinforcing its commitment to Responsible Gaming through a series of initiatives and key milestones.

DraftKings is launching a national Responsible Gaming advertising campaign during Problem Gambling Awareness Month, backed by a commitment of over $10 million to amplify its message and reach a broader audience. Developed with branding support from the NFL and NBA, the ad emphasizes the importance of setting limits and making informed choices.

Airing ahead of the NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, the ad is expected to reach millions of viewers, reinforcing responsible play and promoting sports betting as entertainment strictly for adults.

“At DraftKings, Responsible Gaming is fundamental to our mission, and we are committed to making tools, resources, and education available to all our players to help them play responsibly,” said Lori Kalani, Chief Responsible Gaming Officer at DraftKings.

“Through initiatives like My Stat Sheet, which provides players with their personalized play data, and our new national awareness campaign, we’re reinforcing the importance of responsible play. Paf decides to lower the yearly mandatory loss limit that applies to all customers. At the same time, the loss limit for young customers aged 20-24 is also lowered.

The Nordic gaming company Paf will lower the loss limit from €17,500 to €16,000, limiting the maximum amount a customer can lose playing Paf’s online games. The new loss limit applies to all game categories and all gaming sites operated by Paf.

“We want to be a sustainable entertainment company for our customers, for our employees and for our owners. We are now taking the next step towards more sustainable revenues,” says Christer Fahlstedt, CEO.

Paf’s customers can also set their own gaming limits at lower levels, but the mandatory loss limits that Paf has introduced cannot be exceeded.

The loss limit will also be lowered for all young customers aged 20-24, from €8000 to €6000 per year.

“We want to continue to prioritise young customers and strengthen the responsible gaming approach we take towards them. It is a concrete thing to do and it is the right thing to do,” says Daniela Johansson, Deputy CEO & Chief Responsibility Officer.

Three years ago, Paf introduced a specific loss limit aimed at young people aged 18-24. Since then, the loss limit has been combined with an extra low maximum limit for 18-19 year olds and the limit for young people has been lowered twice.

Paf is the only international gaming company that has introduced mandatory loss limits. This makes Paf stand out in the regulated markets where we compete with other gaming companies.

“We are setting a standard for responsible gaming that is increasingly difficult for other companies to follow. We haven’t reached where we want to be yet, we have a target for the future where the limit is €8,000 a year, but we need to make the reductions at a pace we can manage,” says Christer Fahlstedt.

Paf is in favour of central deposit limits as a tool to strengthen responsible gaming in the industry. The system could effectively be linked to the self-exclusion registers that countries have in place.

“Centralised deposit limits that customers can set themselves and that apply across all gaming operators would significantly improve responsible gaming and minimise the problems that arise when customers jump between operators,” says Daniela Johansson.

Google has announced an upcoming revision to its Gambling and Games advertising policy, which will take effect on April 14.

The company shared a preview of the new guidelines before the official rollout. Under the new guidelines, any content that provides direct links to online gambling or facilitates gambling services will be labeled as gambling-promoting.

This clarifies that aggregator or affiliate websites must exclusively focus on providing information or comparisons about authorized gambling services. Anything beyond that scope will face restrictions.

While the current policy generally refers to “country restrictions,” the updated policy offers a detailed list of countries that permit or prohibit various forms of gambling.

This includes explicitly referencing nations where offline gambling ads are entirely banned (for example, Bulgaria, China, and Egypt).

The policy also addresses social casino games. It specifies which regions require a separate certification application and confirms where social casino game ads may be lawfully run.

FanDuel, North America’s premier online gaming company, announced during the 2024-2025 NFL Season nearly half of its customers, approximately 3.5 million, reviewed their play activity using My Spend, a new personalized responsible gaming dashboard.

The growing adoption demonstrates that customers are engaging with RG tools that provide personalized insights that help them to manage their time and spending on the platform.

My Spend provides customers with detailed insights on their deposit and betting activity, including amount deposited and net winnings over the last seven days, four weeks or three months. The My Spend dashboard also encourages customers to utilize the existing suite of responsible gaming tools FanDuel offers, including deposit limits and wager limits.

To promote and normalize the use of responsible gaming tools, FanDuel launched a bespoke My Spend advertising campaign during the NFL playoffs across broadcast television, digital and paid social. Consumer testing revealed three out of four customers who saw the My Spend advertisement agreed that tools like My Spend are helpful for all players to track and manage their play.

Building on the success of My Spend, FanDuel has introduced its latest RG tool innovation, Deposit Alerts, enabling customers to create daily, weekly and monthly target budgets and receive a notification when they reach the amount they’ve set. Customers can now find Deposit Alerts in the Responsible Gaming section of the FanDuel app.

“We want our customers to know what they are spending and to ensure they are within their comfort zone. Since the launch of My Spend, we’ve seen a meaningful rise in engagement with tools that give our customers the ability to create a personalized plan to manage their play,” said Jill Watkins, Senior Commercial Director of Responsible Gaming at FanDuel. “We’re encouraged by the progress and remain steadfast in our commitment to making responsible play a natural part of the FanDuel experience for all customers.”

FanDuel Planning Additional RG Technology Advancements in 2025

The company is also expanding efforts to leverage technology to enable early intervention when at-risk behavior is identified with new initiatives to be announced in 2025. FanDuel aims to set the standard for consumer protection as a legal operator, leading the way in creating a sustainable industry that only a licensed and regulated market can provide.

LeoVegas Group, the operator behind household names like LeoVegas, BetMGM and BetUK, are set to make changes to their sites as part of their long term safer gambling strategy which bring player protection to the fore.

These products are designed to strengthen protections for all players and encourage sensible spending, with the introdcution of net deposit limits.

The subject of affordability checks has been hugely controversial, with the Gambling Commission also having run a consultation in which one possible outcome was the imposition of checks at as low a level as a net loss of £100 per month, after which customers would have to prove they could afford to lose more.

Net deposit is the sum of deposits minus the withdrawals punters made for a period. The net deposit limit is the maximum value that can be lost in the period.

Every time a punter wins and withdraw funds, the limit will adjust, allowing punters to deposit more whilst ensuring that the punter cannot lose a disproportionate amount of money. The deposit limit is usually self-imposed. This means that punters can set it and change it.

It’s a cap on how much people can deposit over a certain period. The net deposit limit is something operators apply to accounts to protect people.

The National Football League today announced a partnership with the Responsible Gambling Council (RGC) to develop and implement a comprehensive responsible gambling training program specifically designed for university and college student-athletes.

The RGC and NFL have identified student athletes as an important audience for targeted responsible
gambling and problem gambling prevention initiatives, as previous research has shown their susceptibility to risky gambling behavior.

The program will launch with a pilot phase at eight universities and colleges across Canada in the
upcoming 2025 spring semester. Insights and feedback from this phase will be used to refine and improve the program before its broader rollout to 30 university and college institutions in the 2025 – 2026 school year.

The initiative will include a robust evaluation framework to measure the effectiveness and impact of the training. The NFL and RGC will explore opportunities to share the results and key learnings from this initiative with broader audiences to maximize its impact.

“Student-athletes face unique pressures from academics, athletics, and the accessibility of sports betting, making them vulnerable to risky gambling behaviours,” said Sarah McCarthy, chief executive officer, Responsible Gambling Council. “Our partnership with the NFL is a crucial step in supporting this group by providing the education and tools needed to make informed decisions. Early responsible gambling education helps student-athletes build capacities to succeed both on and off the field.”

“We are proud to support the Responsible Gambling Council in this important initiative,” said AnnaIsaacson, NFL senior vice president of social responsibility. “Our shared goal is to equip these student- athletes with the tools and knowledge to navigate gambling risks, fostering a safer and more responsible environment. We also hope to gain insights that will be invaluable in shaping future responsible gambling efforts to benefit all those who play and engage with our game as fans.”

The program aims to equip student-athletes across Canada with the knowledge and tools necessary to
make informed decisions about gambling. RGC will design and develop a course that is tailored to the
specific student-athlete audience, and support in “training the trainer” at participating campuses, which is a key component in ensuring those delivering the training have the right tools and information to support the learning goals of the program.

From 1 February, Norsk Tipping lowers the maximum limit for how much money players aged 20 to 24 can lose on games with us.

In 2023, we lowered the maximum loss limit for players between the ages of 18 and 20 to NOK 2,000 per monh. We are now lowering the limit for players from 20 to 24 years old, and the new limits will be as follows: Age group, Max loss per month 20-21 years NOK 3,000. 22-24 years NOK 5,000.

Few or no national gambling markets in the world protect customers better against gambling problems than the Norwegian one. Still, there is more to do.

The figures show that we must protect young adults better. Statistics from both the University of Bergen and the Helpline for gambling addicts show that young adults are more vulnerable to developing gambling problems than older people. Measurements carried out by Norsk Tipping have shown that one in five men between the ages of 18 and 25 are in the risk zone.

Young people generally have more vulnerable finances than older people, and higher living costs generally increase this vulnerability. Young people thus get into trouble more quickly if the losses are many and large.

When we also see that the number of young people who seek out casino games is increasing, it gives cause for concern. It is therefore appropriate to lower the loss limits for the most vulnerable age groups now.

The most important accountability measure is that the players themselves must set their own limits before playing, and on average the players set their limit at NOK 3,600 per month. For those who cannot limit themselves, the maximum loss limit is an important safety net.

When this limit is lowered, it will contribute to the prevention of problem gambling and it will limit damage for those who nevertheless have problems, says head of responsible gambling, Bjørn Helge Hoffmann in Norsk Tipping. The maximum loss limit for players aged 25 and over is NOK 20,000 per month. High-risk games, such as online casinos and slot machines, have lower stake limits.

GAMSTOP, the national self-exclusion scheme for online gambling, has announced record registration numbers for the start of the year.

In the biggest daily figures since its inception in 2018, GAMSTOP saw 415 people signing up on January 1st, followed by 413 new registrants on January 2ndand 396 on the 6th – the 3 highest daily registration figures since May 2023.

In a continued effort to support vulnerable consumers, GAMSTOP has introduced a new ‘5 years with auto-renewal’ option, for vulnerable consumers looking to extend their exclusion from gambling websites and apps. The new 5 -year auto-renewal exclusion was developed in direct response to feedback from users.

More than half a million people have signed up for GAMSTOP’s services in the years following its launch, with many expressing a desire for longer-term exclusion options. Independent evaluation of the service by Ipsos found that some users are nervous about what happens when they come to the end of their exclusion period and others would have opted for a “lifetime” ban if it had been available.

Currently, at the end of a consumer’s self-exclusion period, the exclusion remains active for up to a further seven years unless they contact GAMSTOP to ask for it to be removed.

Under the new option, consumers who select 5-years with auto-renewal will have their exclusion automatically renewed for an additional 5-year period once the initial term expires. This cycle will continue, providing an ongoing safeguard against gambling participation unless the consumer actively chooses to opt-out of the auto-renewal feature.

For consumers who have opted in to receive emails, GAMSTOP will also begin sending email reminders to those with 5-year exclusions (with or without auto-renewal) every 15 months, helping them stay informed about their upcoming expiration and renewal dates.

The 5-year auto-renewal exclusion option is now available alongside GAMSTOP’s existing 6-month, 1-year, and 5-year exclusion periods. Consumers with a current 5- year exclusion will be able to upgrade it by turning on auto-renewal within their account.

Gamstop Group CEO, Fiona Palmer said: “We have come a very long way since our launch in April 2018, but our journey doesn’t stop there.

Our goal is to provide consumers with tools and options that empower them to take control of their gambling activity. As such, we’re consistently listening to feedback and evaluating the effectiveness of our service.

Consumers wanted longer exclusion periods and we listened. The introduction of the 5-year auto-renewal exclusion is an important step in ensuring consumers peace of mind when using our service and helping vulnerable consumers take a sustained break from their gambling.”
